"But what does it say? 'The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart' (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. " Romans 10:8-10
The final step toward salvation is to confess the Lord Jesus Christ with your mouth. Why must we verbally express our belief in Jesus Christ? Jesus said, "...for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks". (Matthew 12:34) Verbal confession of Jesus Christ gives evidence of the belief that is in the heart. Secondly, it is an act of faith. Faith without works (corresponding action) is dead (non-existent). (James 2:20) The act of verbal confession (works) makes belief in Jesus Christ (faith) complete and alive (come into existence).
"Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?" James 2:22
Finally, it is evidence of not being ashamed of Jesus Christ or His suffering. Jesus said if we are ashamed to own Him before men, He will be ashamed to own us at His coming. Confessin by mouth gives evidence of the chnge which has taken place in the mind and heart (realizing the need to be saved, repentance, believing and accepting).
